American researchers have developed a wearable monitor that tracks heart rate, potentially aiding in early detection of heart conditions. However, a study by Duke Clinical Research Institute in North Carolina found that the use of heart monitors didn't reduce hospitalizations due to strokes. Published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the study registered around 12,000 patients aged 70 or above with no prior history of atrial fibrillation (AF). About half were monitored for 14 days, while others received regular care. After 15 months of follow-up, AF diagnoses increased by 52% among device users compared to those under standard care. These monitors, including those in smartwatches, track heart rate during exercise or stress, alerting users to potential issues. However, they may not replace more accurate medical devices.
